Overview
If you think surveying is hammering pegs into the
ground, think again!
Career opportunities have grown dramatically in
recent years. The term Spatial Sciences covers many exciting
choices, from mapping oceans to high-tech remote sensing.
A career in the Spatial Sciences lets you:
- work outdoors, in an office, or
both,
- in the city, in the country,
- in Australia or overseas,
- in your own consultancy,
- in small or large private firms,
or
- in government departments.
Surveying is concerned with the
measurement, management, analysis and display of spatial information
describing the Earth, its physical features and the built
environment.
Spatial science degrees score very
high graduate employment rates in the Federal Government’s
national employment survey. The 1999 Graduate Destination Survey
lists surveying fourth behind medicine, pharmacy and veterinary
science, with 94.3% of graduates in full time employment four months
after graduation.
The report revealed some disciplines
were "a springboard to a near-guaranteed first job":
"The
news is great for medics, pharmacists, vets, surveyors, nurses,
dentists, lawyers and engineers."
The good news is consistent: since
1994, surveys show between 85-90 percent of spatial science
graduates gained full time employment within 4 months of graduation,
making the profession one of the top ten employers.
